Abstract
Learning is constituted of generation and refinement of internal models to predict and efficiently encode up-coming sensory information. This necessitates dynamic interactions between external (“bottom-up”) inputs and internal (“top-down”) states of the brain. Although theories postulate a learning-driven shift in sensory cortices from bottom-up to top-down dominant states, circuit mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. In this talk, I will describe recent experiments testing these theoretical predictions using chronic two-photon calcium imaging in the mouse primary visual cortex (V1). I found that V1 indeed shifts its operation mode by changing the balance between bottom-up and top-down inputs and that a particular type of inhibitory interneurons is regulating this process. Future studies will be discussed in relation to potential mechanisms underlying interactions between the bottom-up and top-down pathways and provide macroscopic understandings for cortical computations implemented in such dynamic changes during learning.
