Recording neural activity in behaving animals is the main approach to decode neural correlates of behavior and to explore the mechanisms underlying neurological disorders. However, information obtained from traditional methodologies has been limited by the lack of definitive methods to determine the identities of recorded cells. In this talk, Dr Cui will outline the latest optogenetic tools that can achieve real-time optical measurement of various types of neuronal events (action potentials, neurotransmitter release, intracellular messengers and gene expression) in genetically defined groups of cells in freely moving mice. He will focus on his recent work using genetically encoded calcium indicators to explore the function of the direct and indirect pathways in the basal ganglia during reward-seeking operant behaviors.
