Macroscopic developmental patterns are established through cell fate determination at the single cell level. Yet it is unclear how the gene network achieves the high level of precision and reproducibility in patterning despite the intrinsic noise of gene expression as well as extrinsic environmental fluctuations. Combining quantitative imaging and modeling, I investigated the mechanism of cell fate determination during Drosophila embryogenesis. In particular, I will present two parallel studies focusing on i) the dynamical response of developmental patterns upon the concentration perturbation of maternal morphogen Bicoid; and ii) the spatial scaling of developmental patterns under the embryo size fluctuation. These studies reveal how the gene network maintains robustness in cell fate determination through integrating multiple maternal morphogen inputs dynamically during embryogenesis. Our results shed light on the design principle of biological networks that orchestrates collective multicellular behavior, and demonstrate the potential of utilizing precise measurements to uncover subtle, yet critical effects in complex biological networks.
