Biochemistry Lab

Biochemistry Experiment is a major course that integrates the theoretical study of biochemistry with practical skills, aiming to enhance the basic experimental abilities of undergraduates. This course is tailored for undergraduates at the School of Life Sciences in Peking University and is also open to undergraduates from other colleges, including Yuanpei College and the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, as well as those pursuing dual degrees or minors. More than 100 students enroll in this course each academic year. The curriculum covers the separation, purification, quantification, and identification of biological macromolecules, and teaches essential experimental skills such as the preparation of biomolecules, spectroscopic analysis, chromatography, electrophoresis, and ultracentrifugation. Students will be trained to operate a range of laboratory instruments, such as centrifuges, pipettes, protein purification system, protein electrophoresis apparatus, semi-dry transfer blot systems, spectrophotometers, microplate readers, and others. As biochemistry theory and experimental techniques continue to advance, the course is constantly updated to incorporate the latest technologies and experimental methods. Details of the teaching content are provided in the syllabus each semester.
