Biography

Bai Yang is a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Life Sciences, Peking University, and a Principal Investigator at the Peking-Tsinghua Center for Life Sciences. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Cologne in 2010, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research from 2011 to 2016. From 2016 to January 2024, he served as a Professor at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and contributed to the establishment of the China-UK Joint Research Centre on Plant and Microbial Sciences. In February 2024, he joined Peking University. His research focuses on rhizosphere microbiome–plant interactions, investigating crop growth and health from a "microbiota–host synergy" perspective. His findings have been published in journals including Cell, Nature, Science, and Nature Biotechnology. He has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher for 2022–2025 and has led key projects such as the National Key Research and Development Program. He is a recipient of the Thousand Young Talents Program, the National Ten-Thousand Talents Program (Leading Scientist), the Science Exploration Award, and the New Cornerstone Investigator Award. His major research achievements are summarized as follows:
1.Establishment of a systematic platform for rhizosphere microbial resources and functional studies. He overcame bottlenecks in rhizosphere microbial isolation and cultivation, building comprehensive strain and genomic resource libraries. In Arabidopsis, he achieved culturability for 64% of abundant bacteria and used synthetic communities to dissect community assembly mechanisms (Nature, 2015). In crops, he developed high-throughput cultivation and precise identification systems (Nature Protocols, 2021). He further constructed the first genome resource of crop rhizosphere bacteria and viruses (Cell, 2025), revealing conserved principles of root colonization and bacterium–virus interactions. From this work, he identified PcrIIC1, a natural enhancer of Cas9 derived from rhizosphere bacteria, which promotes Cas9 dimerization and enhances DNA cleavage activity (Nature, 2024).
2.Elucidation of the functions and mechanisms by which rhizosphere microbiota regulate crop traits. He demonstrated that rhizosphere microbes are as important as host genes in modulating rice tillering: the bacterium Exiguobacterium R2567 produces the cyclic dipeptide cyclo(Leu-Pro), which targets the strigolactone receptor to regulate tillering (Cell, 2025). From a microbiome perspective, he elucidated the mechanism underlying nitrogen-use efficiency in indica rice, revealing the role of NRT1.1B in mediating microbiome selection (Nature Biotechnology, 2019). He also identified beneficial bacteria that suppress wheat Fusarium head blight and characterized their molecular mechanisms (Nature Microbiology, 2022).
3.Clarification of the molecular basis by which plant metabolites shape the rhizosphere microbiome. He systematically demonstrated that plant triterpenoid secondary metabolites selectively modulate rhizosphere bacterial community structure, contributing to plant–microbe coevolution (Science, 2019). He further discovered that sesquarterpenes and coumarins play key regulatory roles in rhizosphere community assembly (PNAS, 2019; Science China Life Sciences, 2019).
